Spiderbot

It’s alive!

Spiderbot is the first in a series of rigs I will make available here. Feel free to download and use it for your projects and reels.

Spiderbot rig is designed with speed in mind. Controls are fairly simple but you can get some nice performances out of him. The mesh smoothing controls are located on the Spiderbot Global Position control.

Hope you guys enjoy it and drop me a line if you do a animation with him, I would love to see it!

Cheers,

Ali

Thanks for the release. I’m using 2008 but had no problem opening the file after I modified it. I’m looking forward to your future rigs. What kind of rigs will they be?

Thanks Rico. Yea it should open on any version of maya since its not really using anything maya 2009 specific.

I’ll post info about the next model\rig soon :)

    Hey. Cool Rig.
    Speaking as an animator,
    here are some thoughts:

    I definately want the HeadControl
and the TurretControl to RotateX and Z.
That would make for some nice spine-like movement.

I also want the entire Head and turret piece to stretch up.

I want the control to telescope the cannon out.

Btw the cannon tube geo needs to freeze transforms.

I like the legs. They look like the need some kind
of feet platforms to feel like they touch the ground.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

    Hey Ali,

Terrific rig! I’m working on a quick little animation with it now, I’ll send you a link soon. More rotation controls on the head would be nice. The biggest thing would be eyelids and an eyeblink control! Kind of silly for a robot to blink I admit, but it can add a lot of character.

Thanks for the rig, it’s a lot of fun to animate!

Hi Ali, thanks for releasing this spider rig, looks cool to animate, Im looking forward for the rat rig, the model looks awesome. btw Im also an AM student, finishing class 6 now.

Im having troubles opening the spider rig. I have maya 2008 on a Mac.
I get an error saying that the errors have ocurred on the scene resulting in data loss and to check the script editor for details.
There it only states ” // Error: Error reading file. ”

    cheers,

    Hi Bruno,

You just need to open the scene file in a text editor and just change the part towards the top of page that says “requires maya 2009″ to 2008.

It will open fine in maya 2008 after that.

    Hi Ali,

thanks man, it worked fine. The rig is great for animation practice, going to plan something for him soon.

I’m learning to rig in maya, I have always been curious as to how make the atribute smooth work? can you explan it to me, it can be a quick explanation, just so I have a starting point to try things. The atribute is located in the master control, where I can set the smooth iterations of the whole mesh.

    thanks again,

Sorry for the late reply bruno, had a spam attack on the site and had to disable comments.

Thats pretty easy to setup. I just created a custom attribute and linked that to the smooth iteration with the connection editor.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Ali,

thought i’d drop a comment on your spider bot i’ve starting animating it,
Im wondering are you thinking of adding an eye lid to it, helping it blink can help push the animation besides that nice work.

    Fatih.
